Class Description:
Surface pattern design is everywhere—on clothing, wallpaper, journals, phone cases, and more. Behind every one of those products is an artist who created a repeating design. In this class, that artist will be you!
We’ll start by drawing motifs—the small illustrations or shapes that form the building blocks of a pattern. Then, step by step, you’ll learn how to arrange those motifs into seamless, professional-looking patterns using only Procreate on your iPad. No Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or Creative Suite required.
Whether you’re curious about turning your art into products, building a portfolio, or simply exploring a new creative outlet, surface pattern design is a powerful skill that opens doors to both fun projects and professional opportunities.
Prerequisite: The Procreate Basics class is required before taking this workshop. That class will be offered on October 4, 2025 — details here.
If you cannot attend on October 4, please contact me directly — I have a recorded version of the class available that will get you ready for Surface Pattern Design.
By the end of class, you’ll:
Understand what surface pattern design is and why it’s such a fast-growing creative field.
Create original motifs in Procreate.
Learn how to build seamless repeating patterns from your motifs.
Explore color palettes and composition strategies for polished results.
Export your work for print-on-demand, products, or personal projects.
Leave with a finished repeating pattern ready to use.
