Description:
Have you seen needle felting and wondered how they created such gorgeous, textured designs in wool?
It involves a special felting needle being used to stab and agitate wool fibers so they join and bond together. The great thing about the process is that it is relaxing, creative and just plain fun. As you work your scene begins to develop into an enchanting design.
The process is not difficult to learn, especially with an instructor who has many years of experience. People in prior classes were able to customize their designs during the session, each creating a unique personalized piece from the design provided.
You have four choices in designs, shown below. The kit includes all the materials and tools necessary to complete your chosen design. This includes a full spectrum of wool rovings. If you are unfamiliar with the term “rovings” it’s the wool fibers that are processed but not yet spun into yarn. It’s usually soft, fluffy and comes in a long narrow bundle. It is available in many colors.
The instructor will assist you through each step of the process offering individual help as needed. You’ll also receive written instructions, with photographs, to ensure that you can complete both the original design and to continue to use the techniques to complete other designs as well.
Lynn has extensive experience in a variety of fabric art from felting to batik. She studied Textile Design with a minor in Art History at a variety of universities across the country. Lynn has been with CAG for two years and is acting as the Director of Education. She is excited to share her experience with everyone.
When you register, let Lynn know which of the designs below you’d like to complete. She will prepare a kit just for you.
Be sure to bring something for lunch during class.

From the instructor:
I love sharing new ideas and supplies.
In this workshop, I will be showing you some of my failures and what I will do to them to make them be more exciting or at least learn how to approach them the next time (fixing and finishing ideas).
It is very exciting to see students start taking risks and coming up with ideas and ways to change a painting that didn’t turn out to our liking. All too often we put these in a bin and start a new one!
But … once it is no longer “precious” we are now free to experiment and take risks.
When we begin a new piece, we are already thinking "who will see this and judge it?! We are also considering the cost of the paper, supplies, getting the colors right, etc. We lose the joy of watercolor when we lay on the pressure that it has to turn out well! Then what do we do when we blow it???
Please bring a few of your unfinished or less than perfect paintings that I can use to suggest, demonstrate or play with in front of the group. We all learn from each other.
*As for lunch, in a one-day workshop, I've found going out to eat cuts into time, disrupts flow and makes students sleepy afterward. I hope this is okay with you all to bring your own lunch along with a drink. There is a full kitchen with refrigerator and microwave. I thought we might just take a break while we eat and if anyone wants to stay at their seat and keep working, this is fine with me.
Students are encouraged to review Linda’s suggested supply list is on her website www.lindagriffin.com
Linda began her art career painting commissioned oil portraits of Victorian Bed and Breakfasts in and around the Cape May, NJ area. These were very tight, realistic rendering requiring months to complete. Then she discovered the joys and terrors of watercolor with all of its rules and freedoms! As her experience grew, she became more aggressive with strong color transitions and unusual combinations while working in a representational manner.

Description:
Learn to use needle felting wool fiber to “paint” a picture. We will be starting with a pre-felt base (sheet of partially felted wool) that has a transfer of the simple photo of a peaceful sleeping cat. Then, using our fibers and needles we will try and recreate our picture in fiber (and of course use our creative license!). We will be learning to blend fibers to get our results. Our “painting” will be an 8 x 10 picture which can easily be placed in an 11 x 14 mat and frame.
The materials will include fiber to complete the project, 2 felting needles, pre-felt base with transfer of image of sleeping kitty and a foam work pad. Students only need to bring a sense of humor and their imagination!
Irene began needle felting (both 2D and 3D) in 2002 when the fiber art form was relatively unknown in the United States. Since then, she has won many awards for her work across the country. She has produced an instructional DVD and is currently working on a needle felting book.
Irene lives in Western North Carolina near Asheville with her husband and fur family.

Description:
Metal Clay is a unique art medium that allows anyone to create beautiful real silver jewelry without metalsmithing experience. Thanks to its malleable consistency, metal clay can be cut, textured, carved, molded, hammered and much more. The pieces you create make wonderful gifts!
But what is Metal Clay? It is refined silver particles mixed with an organic binder and water creating a clay like consistency. It can be torch fired and kiln fired. During the firing process, the water and binder burn out and the silver particles melt together (called sintering) leaving you with solid silver.
In this introduction to metal clay workshop I will provide guided, hands-on instruction. I keep my workshops small so you get the one on one attention you need to be successful.
During our time together, you will learn the following basic metal clay techniques: how to properly roll out your clay in an even thickness, cutting your clay using a template, texturing using texture mats or free hand, joining 2 pieces of clay, and refining your dry clay to remove any sharp or rough areas. You will observe the burnout and sintering process while I torch fire your piece. Yes, there will be a bit of fire that is safe and contained. Finally you will experience the magic of metal clay as you finish your piece by polishing and attaching a jump ring and chain to complete your own piece of solid Fine Silver wearable art.
No experience needed!
Susan Tobelman is the creative force behind Energy & Ore Custom Jewelry in Mint Hill, NC, where she has been crafting distinctive metal clay jewelry for over six years. With both a Techniques and Teaching Certification in precious metal clay, Susan combines her technical expertise with a deep passion for design. She offers a range of unique, personalized pieces that reflect her clients' individual stories and emotions. In addition to running her jewelry business, Susan is dedicated to sharing her knowledge through beginner metal clay workshops in her local area and virtual classes, helping others discover the artistry and joy of silver jewelry making.
