“Negative Painting in Watercolor”
Instructor: Annie Glacken
Oct. 14th – 15th, 9:00 - 4:00
Location: Florence Thomas Art School, West Jefferson, NC
Cost: $200
To Register: https://www.florenceartschool.org/event/negative-painting-in-watercolor-with-annie-glacken/
Description:
In this class, we will paint “Fall Leaves and Acorns” in watercolor using negative painting techniques.
Negative painting is the process of painting the background space around a penciled in shape in order to create it. For example, instead of painting a leaf shape, you paint the space around it with a darker value to define the leaf. Therefore, you create the positive shapes by painting the areas around them. As the painting develops, more shapes are added. Each layer will add a darker value thereby creating depth in the painting.
Annie teaches in a paint-along method by first demonstrating the step and then allowing students to complete the steps incrementally.
This class is suitable for advanced beginners. Students must be familiar with using basic watercolor techniques such as creating basic washes, wet into wet washes, and glazing.

“Watercolor Batik Miniatures”
Instructor: Annie Glacken
Oct. 16th, 9:00 - 4:00
Location: Florence Thomas Art School, West Jefferson, NC
Cost: $115
To Register: https://www.florenceartschool.org/event/watercolor-batik-miniatures-with-annie-glacken/
Description:
In this workshop students will learn how to paint in a batik style using layers of watercolor and wax on rice paper.
Students will have their choice of painting their own designs (simple designs with limited detail work best) or designs the instructor provides. Examples of simple designs would be: a bird, a butterfly, birdhouses, wine bottle, flower, fruit, coffee cups or mugs, etc. Designs should fit the top and sides of a 6” x 6” gallery wrapped canvas.
After designs are painted, students will mount their paintings onto canvas and seal them. These canvases make great gifts to either hang or set on a table or bookshelf.
