Art on Tap event brings adult crafts to The Galleries

12/28/2016

Art can be admired on a wall. It can be treasured from a shelf. But it can also be appreciated as it goes down the hatch.

That’s the thinking behind Art on Tap’s Craft Beer and Clay, an event that combines two artistic expressions – clay and craft beer – for enjoyment and admiration in The Galleries on Friday, January 13, at 7 pm.

Art on Tap is a Cabarrus Arts Council group for young adults over 21 with an interest in the arts. Members come from diverse backgrounds, and say the group has been a great way to mingle with others their own ages while learning more about the arts offered in their community.

Now in its third year, the group’s numbers have steadily grown, with members ranging from their twenties to their early forties.

Wondering if you’re on the cusp of consideration as a young adulthood?  Here’s a simple test to determine your answer: Do you find yourself talking to people about various ailments, like a stiff hip or an achy knee? Does your grocery store list regularly contain some sort of ointment? Do you remember when a payphone call cost a dime? Do you know what a payphone is? Can you match the name Frank Poncherello with the show his character appeared on?

If you’ve answered ‘yes’ to any of these, you may want to consider staying home for this one, lest risk feeling like a chaperone.

Activities for Craft Beer & Clay will kick off with tastings supplied by Cabarrus Brewing Company, Concord’s first full-scale brewery. Located in the old Gibson Mill, CBC crafts all of its own beer, giving most of them names with local ties, like Rocky River IPA, Reed’s Gold Ale and Cabarrus Cotton Blond Ale.

Those beers will most likely be available for tasting, along with at least one of their new beers, either Mocha Blonde Ale, made with S&D Coffee’s Dark Sky coffee beans, or their seasonal Winter Spice Ale.

Brew master Jason McKnight encourages people non-beer drinkers to give craft beer a try. They may be surprised by the complexity of the flavors. “People don’t think they like craft beer,” said McKnight. “But they haven’t been exposed to it.”

Hands-on activities during Craft Beer & Clay will be provided by Stephanie Gainer, President of the Cabarrus Arts Guild. Gainer will hand out newly made clay tiles for participants to design using stamps and glaze. After a few weeks in the kiln, they’ll be ready to take home.

Gainer said the similarities between creating art pieces with clay and crafting specialty beer makes them the perfect pairing for an Art on Tap activity.

“With both, you can manipulate something out of nothing, and you can get some surprising results.”

CAG Fall Judged Show Winners Announced!

11/15/2016

Thanks to all of you who entered our Fall Judged Show!  If you were not at the reception this past Sunday, you need to find time to come by the first floor gallery and check it out.  It is a beautiful show with over 70 pieces of art of several media.  Our judges spent over three hours in choosing the winners and all expressed their delight and amazement at the quality of the art in the show.

Our winners were Malia Bryngelson, Kristy Keistler, Susan Lackey, Ann Glacken, Beth Schmit, Helen Newton, and Deb Visbeck.

So if your name is in the list above, and you were NOT at the reception for the presentation of the ribbons and prizes, your prize awaits you at the Gallery and you may pick it up during open hours.

My heartiest congratulations to all our winners!  As I said during the presentations, the competition gets stiffer with each show we do, which is a good thing as it makes the shows better and forces all of us to continue to pursue and improve the pieces that we produce.  We all grow as result of this.

Again, CONGRATULATIONS to all.

New Feathered Friends.  Well Stained Glass Actually.

We thought we'd share this photo of the new "Stained Glass Bird" friends that were created in Susan Lackey's recent class at the Guild.  Susan states that the participants that created these charming birds were a bit "camera-shy" and didn't want to be photographed with their creation.  The creations themselves however are definitely very photogenic.  Great job all!

2016 Halloween Candy Crawl Is Right Around The Corner!

10/6/2016

Fall is here and that means the annual Halloween Candy crawl is near!  This year's event is Monday, October 31, 3:00 - 5:00 PM.  The past couple of years we have had success with the children's art contest and photos.  In order to offer this outreach again this year, we need some volunteers.  Please reply if you can help  with the art contest, taking pictures, or helping with the Photoshop work on the pictures (cropping and printing).

Mark your calendar for the next Art Walk, Friday November 18, 6:00-9:00 PM.  This is usually the largest Art Walk of the year.  It is the downtown Christmas Tree lighting.  We have already lined up John Culbreath to do the music.  It will be a festive evening.  Our visitors like to meet the artists so please come and enjoy

Please note there has been a change in downtown parking.  The lot behind the Concord Hotel (where the new Lofts 29 are) is no longer free.  You can lease a numbered space for $25.00 per month or $125.00 for 6 months. This change is effective immediately and towing is enforced. If you are interested in leasing a spot please contact patrick@rehab-development.com and send your name, email address for billing, vehicle make and model and license plate number.  The lot behind the building is still free with the 3 hour parking limit.

Thanks,

Stephanie and June

CAG Artist Annie Glacken's Watercolor Selected For Exhibition

10/6/2016

Annie Glacken’s painting, “Two Heads are Better Than One II” has been selected for the Watercolor Society of North Carolina’s 71st Exhibition at the Dare County Arts Council in Manteo, NC.   The Juror for this year’s exhibition is Mark Mehaffey. Annie’s models for this painting were her own pasture animals.  This particular chicken used to hitch a ride on Ezekiel, the sheep’s back.  The painting was painted with transparent watercolors on 300lb. Arches watercolor paper.

Congratulations to Annie for this outstanding honor!

Concord Downtown Development Corporation Hosting Unique Event

8/29/2016

As part of our creative community I want to make you aware of a new event we are launching this fall. The CDDC is hosting a one-day event called Create the Connection – Switch on the Sidewalks, to be held Saturday, October 22 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. We are encouraging artists/inventors/tinkerers to develop an installation that will be placed on the sidewalk in Downtown Concord for that one day. The community will come out and vote on their favorite installation(s) (first vote is free, subsequent votes have a small fee), and cash prizes will be awarded for the top three vote getters. Prizes are $1000, $500, and $250. There is no entry fee, we do need a sketch of what you would intend to install to verify it meets the criteria of this event. Attached is a flyer with the criteria. Even better examples are found at this link. Keep in mind our sidewalks are narrow, smaller installations would be more appropriate, however, building in an interactive component would be terrific.

Our goal for this event is to develop ways to activate our sidewalks in a permanent way moving forward. Through this event (will be annual) we can literally test-drive installations, as they will be placed on the sidewalks, and can potentially select some installations to build out in a permanent fashion down the road.

Deadling for submitting a sketch is September 15th. Please consider joining us, and do feel free to share this info with fellow creative minds.

Thank you!
