In this class you’ll learn how to create custom batik fabric for a quilt, wall hanging, or garment. The batik process generates complex, stitch-able designs with wax resist and color layering on fabric. Wax is applied to fabric with a stamp called a tjap (pronounced “chop”). Several choices of images are offered: turtle (see left), irises, dragonfly, or butterfly.
Colors are painted in layers alternating with wax. An optional crackling technique produces a marbled effect, it’s seen as navy blue background lines in the turtle design above. Finally, the piece is ironed to remove the wax and set the paint colors.
