A MESSAGE ABOUT  OUR GUILD PRESIDENT Margaret Troxler had knee surgery on Wednesday, 19th March at Carolina’s Northeast Medical Center. The surgery went very well and by the time you receive this newsletter she will be doing cartwheels (she says!). Margaret will be going to Rowan Regional Medical Center, Stanback Rehab Services, 612 Mocksville Ave, Salisbury, NC 28144  for rehab.  Cards may be sent to her at this address.

Jennie Martin Tomlin - A Retrospect

Paintings from past decades reveal a progression of styles and themes created by one of Cabarrus County’s most prominent artists.  The exhibit is a prolific mix of representational paintings of lighthouses, floral watercolors, and mix-media abstracts.  Many of the pieces are on loan from private collections.  The artist/teacher also shares a wall space in the gallery with 20 of her students.

“Jennie is a community treasure,” states curator Lin Barnhardt.   “The public has waited for years to see this body of work displayed together,” he continued.

Jennie holds art degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University and UNC-Charlotte.  She has studied under  many  excellent and internationally known artists  including, Cheng Khee Chee , Sterling Edwards, Tom Jones, Diana Khan, Chuck McLachlan, Joe Miller, Sally Miller, Barbara Nechis, Elsie Popkin,  Ron Ranson, Carol Sebold, Wes Waugh and Zolten Zsabo. 

Jennie's exhibition will be held at the Cabarrus Arts Council Galleries, 65 Union St., Concord, NC.

May 3rd, 10 am - 5 pm
Spring into Arts Festival, Concord, NC

Downtown Concord’s “Spring into Arts Festival” Saturday, May 3, will feature an outstanding line-up of regional bands, children’s activities, artist booths, a paint-out competition and food vendors.

The outdoor festival will open at 10 a.m. with activities continuing until 5 p.m.

Live entertainment will be provided by three popular bands:  11 a.m., Carolina Gator Gumbo, Charlotte-based Cajun and Creole band; 1 p.m., Robin Rogers Band, Charlotte blues group.; and 3 p.m., Freeport, Winston-Salem jazz ensemble, 3 pm

The large children's area will feature mime and street performer Jef Lamdin’s “InterACTive Theater of Jef,” hands-on activities from the Children’s Art Project and Blue Baboon amusements’ spiral art and face painting. All children’s activities are free.

Booths displaying and selling high-quality artwork will line Union Street. Artists, from potters to jewelry makers to painters, will show, demonstrate and sell their work.

Festival goers will also be able to see paint-out competition artists, who are vying for $1,000 in prizes, at work.  The competition, which is open to anyone who wants to register, requires that artists paint in the downtown Concord area on festival day. Awards will be given at a reception at 6 p.m. at the Wedgewood Room at 9 Union Street North. The reception is open to the public, and will give art lovers the opportunity to buy paintings from the competition.

The festival is sponsored by Concord Downtown Development Corporation, Bank of the Carolinas, the Cabarrus Arts Council, the Charlotte Observer, Allied Waste, WDAV 89.9 and Carolinas Medical Center Northeast.

“Summertime”  - A regional juried art competition open to artists residing in Cabarrus County and the five surrounding counties.  $1000.00+ in cash and prizes will be awarded by juror Julie Sweat, owner of the Edward Dare Gallery in Charleston.  Best-In-Show receives Charleston gallery exposure and weekend get-away package to participate in the French Quarter Art Walk.  2D and 3E works are accepted.  $20.00 entry fee for one or two works.  Download prospectus at www.cabarrusartscouncil.org.

Art Walk - May 16th, 2008 6-9 pm

Art Walk in downtown Concord with 20+ galleries, shops, and restaurants participating.  Several Art Guild  members will showcase their works in local venues.  Maps will be available identifying locations.

Lin Barnhardt, Cabarrus Arts Council’s Visual Arts Director, has an ongoing file of artists interested in participating in upcoming Art Walks, as well as submitting ideas for exhibition.  Forms are available in his office or by emailing Lin at lin@cabarrusartscouncil.org.  

Thanks go to Margaret Troxler, Jutta Vest, Charlotte Doyle, Nancy Sanderbeck,  Sylvia Lowder, Kathryn Fry , Gail Tolles and Jennie Tomlin.   These ladies gave up an entire Saturday to put signs together which will be hung in a significant door or window of a participating business to indicate their participation in the art walk and will be numbered to correspond with the number on the art walk map. 

May 19 – July 10 – "Sharing the Chores"
Cabarrus Arts Council Gallery, 65 Union St. N., Concord, NC

An exhibition of works on paper by Jonathan Green sponsored by the North Carolina Arts Council, in arrangement with the McKissick Museum, University of South Carolina – Columbia.  The Gullah-themed show also features indigo batiks by Arianne King Comer, sweetgrass baskets by Ida Jefferson-Bennett, market paintings by Beth McLean, and dolls by Zenobia Washington. 

Also on display are selected photographs from Claire Green’s “Keeper of the Gate” series depicting wrought iron works by noted Charleston blacksmith Philip Simmons.

 Tom’s work has been featured in many books and on magazine covers as well as posters and brochures.  Tom shares his passion for art and love of nature with students of varying skill levels.

Artists Painting in the Garden

Nine acres of the 33 acre estate is planted in thousands of shrubs, perennials and ornamental trees.  Formal gardens, waterfall, three fountains, two ponds and one natural pond.

Admission Price $5.00 (The %.00 or more donation is tax deductible)  tickets are available at the Arts Council Galleries (Historic Courthouse) 65 Union Street South, Concord, NC or the home on the day of the tour.  Checks only are accepted at the Historic Courthouse.  Checks should be made payable to Cabarrus Art Guild.

The Arts Council Galleries in the Historic Courthouse featured  “A Retrospective –Jennie Martin Tomlin”,  a salon show of works by students of Jennie Martin Tomlin and “Practice What They Teach, and exhibition of current and retired art teachers in Cabarrus County.   These three exhibits will be showing until May 3.  2008.
